An Alaskan marriage license is valid only for marriages performed in Alaska or in Alaska State waters. Alaska residents and nonresidents are eligible to apply for a marriage license. Submit the completed application and fee to the nearest Alaska Vital Records Office or an Alaska Court Office. The Marriage License Application fee is $60.00 ($73.00 for mailed-out licenses), payable by check or money order and must be submitted with the application. There is a three (3) day waiting period that begins once a mailed or in-person application is received by the issuing office. The license is valid for three (3) months from the date of issuance. Proxy marriages (where someone stands in for the other party) are not permitted in Alaska.

Several sections were amended to change the requirement for two witnesses in the solemnization of marriage to one witness. The witness must be 18 years of age or older and confirm that each party agrees to marry the other. Those aged 16-17 years will be required to get a court order as opposed to only parental consent as before this bill become law.

You must get a license from the state of Alaska before you can be married. A marriage is not valid unless it is solemnized. There is no common law marriage in Alaska. Before the license is issued, each party may be required to present photo ID showing name and birthdate. A birth certificate is not sufficient. The license costs $60.00. The license must be used within 90 days. It can be used anywhere in Alaska.
