What this is
MarriageLicenseCheck is an independent reference. We are not a clerk, court, county, law firm, officiant, or government agency, and we do not issue licenses or offer legal advice. The issuing authority always controls.
Marriage licenses in the United States are issued locally, by thousands of separate offices, each publishing its own rules in its own way. The result is that general advice is frequently wrong for the office you are actually walking into. This site exists to give you the specific answer for the specific jurisdiction, with the official wording and a link, so you can check it yourself.
Who it is for
Any couple applying for a marriage license. The site uses applicant, partner and couple throughout, treats all couples identically, and makes no assumption about surnames, ceremonies, religion, immigration status or family structure.
What we never do
- Ask for your name, date of birth, Social Security number, a former spouse’s name, or any document. The tool explains what an office may ask for; it never collects it.
- Sell leads to officiants, venues, registries or anyone else.
- Carry ads, affiliate links, paid filing services or newsletter pop-ups.
- Publish reviews or testimonials, which for a reference like this would be noise.
- Guess at a rule an office has not published.
What we cannot tell you
The issuing authority controls. Office hours and appointment availability change without notice. Unusual circumstances — guardianship, incapacity, foreign documents, an unusual age, or a recently ended prior marriage — often require official review that no summary can anticipate. This site is information, not legal advice.
